Gear Up for Summer with These AC Maintenance Tips

Keep Your Filters Free of Debris

You should wash or replace your HVAC filters at least once a month, depending on whether your system uses reusable or disposable filters. Not doing so will surely compromise the effectiveness of your AC unit. Dirty or clogged filters give rise to other problems that negatively affect your entire system. For example, if the filter is congested with dust and debris, airflow through your system is obstructed, which can cause your fan motor to overwork itself and burn out. Check your unit’s manual for applicable instructions.

Keep Your System Clean

Make sure the various parts of your AC unit are in good working order by keeping them clean. Remove leaves and debris from your unit’s condenser and its external vents. If you have a central air system, you have a network of ducts running throughout your home. Have a contractor who specializes in air conditioner maintenance check your ductwork for blockage or tears. Keeping on top of your cleaning regimen will spare you from unnecessary HVAC repair.

Inspect Refrigerant Lines

When you schedule AC repair with your HVAC professional during the summer, you may want to ask your technician to inspect your refrigerant lines. Refrigerant is the liquid substance that is used to generate all of the cool air that comes from your system. By having your refrigerant lines inspected, you can ensure that your AC unit is not at risk of springing a leak.

Check Fan Belts

Over time, your system’s fan belts will wear down and fray. Belts that become too worn will snap. Check the state of your unit’s belts, which are located on the condenser and the fan, every few months. Luckily, they are easy to replace. Do your research before you attempt this procedure since you can damage other structures if you make your belts too tight.
