You may be surprised to hear this, but when you go to fix an exposed duct, you should never use duct tape. Leaky ducts can cause air to go where you don’t want it to go, like into the attic or crawl spaces. Heated and cooled air should go to the living areas of the house, not those uninhabitable spaces where it will go to waste. Here is how you can seal those leaky ducts:

1. Clean the area with a rubbing alcohol to ensure everything is removed.
2. Use a water based duct seal and apply with a foam brush.
3. Let the seal dry for a couple of hours.
4. Apply aluminum tape that has been rated by Underwriters Laboratories around the leak.
