Maintenance Tips for Your HVAC System

Heating and cooling makes up more than 50% of your home’s annual utility costs. HVAC systems become less energy efficient over time, but you can extend the life and efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment with regular maintenance. Whether you perform maintenance yourself or hire a HVAC company in Montgomery County to service your heating and cooling system, HVAC maintenance will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Here are some top tips for maintaining your HVAC system.

Inspect Air Filters Regularly

When air filters become clogged with dirt, dander, pollen, and other debris, the air quality inside your home suffers as a result. Clogged air filters can also cause HVAC equipment to work harder, which means higher energy bills and a shorter lifespan. Check air filters once every three months or so and clean or replace as necessary.

Clean Around AC Unit and Heat Pump

If your HVAC equipment sits on the ground around your home, check to make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around the air conditioning unit and/or heat pump at all times. Also remember to remove leaves and twigs from the top and sides of outdoor HVAC equipment. When mowing the lawn, be careful not to allow the lawn mower to discharge grass clippings onto the unit.

Test Thermostat Battery

Test the batteries inside the thermostat about as often as you check the air filter. Faulty batteries can result in numerous HVAC issues, none of which are good for your heating and cooling equipment. If you don’t already have one, consider investing in a smart programmable thermostat to reduce your energy costs.

Schedule Repairs as Needed

If you want to keep your heating and cooling equipment in tip-top shape, be sure to schedule service with your Montgomery County HVAC repair company as soon as you notice signs of malfunctioning equipment. Unusual smells, odd sounds, and unusually high energy bills are all signs that you should contact your heating and furnace repair provider.
