Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC System?

Consider the Age of the System

One of the first factors that you will need to consider when you are deciding between HVAC repair and replacement is the age of your system. Typically, HVAC systems have around a 15 year lifespan. If your HVAC system has been installed in your home for 15 years or more, it may be time to start thinking about replacing your system.

Look for Refrigerant Leaks

When you are deciding between repairing and replacing your HVAC system, you should also be sure to look for refrigerant leaks in your air conditioning unit. Older air conditioners may have a type of refrigerant that is called R-22. Since R-22 is no longer manufactured, a unit that uses this product may be very costly to repair. Your HVAC technician can evaluate your system for leaks, and determine what type of refrigerant it uses.

Check Your Energy Bills

A final factor to consider when you are deciding between repair and replacement is the cost of your monthly energy bills. When an HVAC system ages, its performance and efficiency may become compromised. Over time, you may see a spike in your monthly energy expenses. To save money on your energy costs and get the best efficiency from your system, you may want to consider a whole unit replacement.
