Tips for Maintaining Your HVAC System

To extend the life of your HVAC system, it is important to schedule an annual inspection and cleaning service with a reliable HVAC contractor in the fall and the spring. During this service, the contractor will inspect and clean the furnace blower, burner, heat exchanger, condenser coils, refrigerant, and wiring. In the interim, performing the following HVAC maintenance services is an easy way to keep your HVAC system reliable and efficient.

Change the Filter
To ensure optimal functioning for your HVAC system, you should replace the filter every ninety days, or every thirty days if you have a shedding pet. You should also replace the humidifier wick filter every fall. To do this, you will first have to shut off the water supply to the furnace humidifier in summer. After summer, replace the humidifier wick filter by setting the humidistat between 35 and 40 percent relative humidity, and then turn the water supply back on.

Clean the HVAC Unit
Every week during the summer time, sweep or blow fallen debris off of your air conditioner units and heat pumps. Every spring, pour a cup of bleach down the condensate drain of your air conditioner. This will help prevent the buildup of mold and algae.

Inspect Insulation Lines
On a monthly basis, it’s a good idea to inspect the insulation that covers the refrigerant lines going into your home. If you notice that something is damaged or missing, contact your HVAC contractor to get it replaced.

Reduce The Stress On Your HVAC System
Make sure there is at least two feet of clearance around outdoor air conditioning units and heat pumps, and that air conditioning units and heat pumps are on a firm and level surface, whether that’s on the ground or pads.
