Indoor air quality has long been a major consideration for many homeowners, but over the past year or so there has been an increased focus on its importance. As many have spent more time at home social distancing in the last 12-plus months, maintaining high air quality within the home has taken on even greater value.
At Presidential Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., we’re proud to assist with numerous indoor air quality services for Gaithersburg, Maryland and the Washington, DC area. We offer air purifiers, fresh air ventilators, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and UV lights. We partner with companies who specialize in air duct cleaning.
Since 1982 we have been helping families improve the quality of the air they breathe in their homes. We are happy to do an evaluation of your environment and customize a solution for you.
Our longtime clients have heard this one from us before, but it’s vital and bears plenty of repeating: Your first and most important tool for home air quality is quality HVAC filtration. The filter on your HVAC system helps remove contaminants from the air as it passes through the filter. It also plays an important role in adequate air flow. A clogged air filter will put a strain on your HVAC system by trying to force more air through it.
HVAC filters are not all created equal. Rather, they are rated on a scale known as MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values). The MERV scale ranges from 1 to 16. While technically there are higher MERV rated filters, they are typically used for surgical areas and other like environments. MERV filters rating between 1-4 capture particles ranging from 3-10 microns in size at 20% efficiency. Filters with a MERV rating of 14, on the other hand, filter particles as small as 0.3 microns with over 80% efficiency.
What level of MERV rating should you be purchasing for your home’s filter? This will depend upon your environment, your specific needs, and your HVAC system. Many residential and commercial buildings will do fine with filters with between a 5-13 MERV rating. We are seeing more MERV 16 filters being used especially for the relief of asthma and allergy symptoms.

Also, very important for air quality, both within your HVAC system and throughout the home in general, is proper ventilation. Components like exhaust vents should be maintained by HVAC professionals.
There are a few things you can do, as a homeowner, to improve ventilation. Opening your home’s windows will allow fresh air in. This fresh air will help dissipate the more polluted air that has been trapped inside your home.
Circulating the air in your home will help remove contaminants as it passes through your HVAC’s filter. Your system’s fan must be running for it to filter the air. Using ceiling fans and/or free-standing fans will also help circulate the air.
The use of overhead fans in the bathrooms will help remove the moisture in the air and thus reduce the development of mold and mildew. Range hoods in the kitchen will remove smoke and other VOC’s.
Behaviors Affecting Indoor Air Quality
Our own behaviors or habits play a role in our home’s air quality – You can find out more about what causes poor air quality in your home in this article. A few to avoid or reduce are:
- Smoke: Most of us are aware that cigarette smoke is harmful to our health. What many don’t realize is that any type of smoke is harmful. Smoke from candles, the fireplace, and even the stove can be harmful to our health.
- Household and Personal Care Products: You wouldn’t expect that while you are cleaning your home you are also contaminating it. The VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) released by common household cleaning products, disinfectants, and air fresheners can be life-threatening to asthmatics. Perfumes, body sprays, and aerosol deodorants add chemical pollutants to the air.
